I JUST wonder how many folk in Tavistock are aware of the cultural jewel within their town that is evensong in the parish church of St Eustachius.

As a relative newcomer to the choir I am struck by the range and quality of the music at each of the two Sunday services. The festival evening services are particularly impressive, even 'awesome' as the younger generation might say.

The director of music's imagination and skills know no bounds as he creates an evening of delight to compliment Cranmer's fine words of prayer and praise.

This last Sunday, as an example, Brewer's stirring Canticles were sung along with an original setting of the responses rising to a climactic rendering of Zadok the Priest.  As people leave at the end, they are usually treated to a stirring triumphant organ recital, all stops open and the building almost shaking. Locals have no cause to wait for a royal wedding to hear such music.

I have no evangelical cause for writing this, nor have I been asked to do so. I would simply commend to those of all faiths or even no faith, who enjoy good music, fine words and possibly, moments of quiet contemplation to consider going to evensong on a Sunday at Tavistock Parish Church and 'enjoy' as they say.
