CALLINGTON Town Band?s tenth birthday celebrations got off to a flying start last Saturday when members performed to a packed house at Callington Methodist Church. The evening was compered by Bruce Taylor from Miller Countrywide, who sponsor the band, and a wide variety of music captivated the audience. The Callington Singers were conducted by their musical director, Graham Williams, and accompanied by Jenny Coombe, and, as the compere remarked Callington was very lucky to have a local choir with such an international reputation. During the evening the two youngest members of the band, Evie Lightbody, 10, and Jennifer Boase, 11, played a cornet duet and the band?s musical director, Paul Boase, put down his baton to play an oboe solo. To mark their tenth anniversary the band presented awards to two founder members, euphonium players Ian Fisher and John Jenkins, who were both given silver pins. Among other awards was the training band award for the person who has shown the most commitment and progress ? this was presented to Evie Lightbody by Bill Leith who conducts the training band. The Betty and David Restall award, for the person who has done most for the smooth running of the band, was jointly awarded to band secretary, Dee Blake and to Bill Leith. Jennifer Boase was awarded the the most improved main band member shield. The band did not have to wait long to fulfil its next engagement as many of them were up bright and early next morning to play at Saltash Waterside where they joined in the Brunel Celebrations.
