TAVISTOCK-based flute choir Flute Cocktail performed a programme of light classical music at North Petherwin Church last weekend. Flute Cocktail comprises flute players from all over the West Devon and East Cornwall area who meet fortnightly to enjoy the experience of ensemble playing. The concert began with Handel's Arrival of the Queen of Sheba arranged for two solo flautists, Becky Martin and Vicky Lambert, and accompanying ensemble. After a traditional classical start the concert moved on to finish the first half with three lighter pieces, a short fun piece entitled Cutie Flootie, which was arranged especially for Flute Cocktail by their leader Sarah Hunt; Flutes with Attitude, a jazz-style piece for alto flute played by Rebecca Wagstaff and a selection of music from the Lloyd Webber musical Joseph. Straight after the interval Jackie Waddle delighted the audience with an unscheduled solo item by Bach, an Arioso entitled One Foot in the Grave — a somewhat sombre title for a beautiful wistful melody in which she was accompanied by Sarah on the organ. The second half continued with shorter well known tunes, including The Pink Panther and Bizet's Habenera from Carmen. The concert concluded with the challenging and virtuosic orchestral work Jupiter, cleverly transcribed for the entire ensemble — including two piccolos, five flute parts, two bass flutes and two altos — then a rousing climax with Sousa's Stars and Stripes, allowing Sarah to finish off the concert in style with the infamous piccolo solo. Flute Cocktail paid tribute to the hospitality of North Petherwin Church and for the support they received. The concert raised more than £300 which will be put towards church funds and the South West Flute Festival due to take place in May.
