A NEW pre-school providing extra services for working parents will be built in Bridestowe thanks to a lottery grant of £50,000. The building will be incorporated into the new village hall which is being constructed next year and will have space to take ten more children than the existing premises at the primary school. Members of the pre-school committee and village hall management committee, who hope to see the project come to fruition in June 2007, have been celebrating the news this week. Chairperson of the pre-school Nicola Stoneman said the current facility was a temporary building at the school which was 30 years old and coming to the end of its life. ?Because we are at the school we have to conform to the school timetable which means we cannot have breakfast clubs, after-school clubs or holiday playschemes,? she said. ?We did a questionnaire in the local area and found there was a demand for these clubs, particularly during the holidays when working parents struggle the most.? The new pre-school will be able to take 26 children and open all year round. Committee members are now busy fundraising to equip the new building. ?It?s going to make a huge difference to us and the local area because there are no other childcare facilities here,? added Mrs Stoneman. Chairman of the village hall management committee Robin Young said he was delighted by the lottery bid success: ?We are building an extra wing on the end for the pre-school, and now we have most of the money in place we hope to have it up and running by June next year.? The total cost of the new village hall, to be constructed at Pool Hill, is in the region of £500,000. Grants from Defra and West Devon Borough Council have contributed to the scheme.
