THE men of Okehampton Golf Club played a qualifying Stableford on Saturday, when conditions were tricky with a swirling wind and a few showers. Winning division one was Del Owen on 38 points, second was Jeff May on 37 and third was Nick Heath with 36. Division two was won by John Whitehouse with 42pts, second Alan Mann on 41 and third Mike Charlesworth on 40. The third division was won by Denis Jenkins on 39, Andy Stevens second with 37 and third was Martin Horn on the back nine, also 37. The ladies were playing to qualify for the Ping regional finals which will be held at Bowood Golf Course, Cornwall, on September 11. In a four ball better ball ¾ handicap is the format and the competition was close. Kath Mansell and Kay King were third with the same score as second placed Pam Jarman and Jane Warren, who had the better back nine, with 39pts. The winners were Penny Deakin and lady captain Cherry James, who had an excellent round and scored 41pts. The Sheelagh Creasy team played an away match against Dartmouth on Monday. Though Dartmouth won six of the matches Doris Jewell kept the Okehampton flag flying and won her match 2-1. Lorna McCurrach was playing her first match for the club and only lost on the 17th hole, so had a promising debut.
