Carlsberg South Western League

Tavistock 1

Callington 1

WITH joint manager Craig Smith absent through illness, Paul Smith and Mark Wall unavailable and Sean Cann injured, Chris Abbott had Adrian Payne and Chris Short in the starting line-up with Dave Brimacombe promoted from the P&D side to sit on the bench.

The local rivalry between the managers and teams normally sets the game up for a passionate affair but it never reached the heights.

The Lambs took the early

initiative, forcing Callington to concede several free kicks and corners and from a set-piece they took the lead after ten minutes.

Darren Babb?s challenge from Tom Barwell?s cross saw the ball fall to Paul Adcock to,stab home from close range.

Craig Hodge shot wide after a poor clearance by Duncan Duthie before Callington had a great chance to level the score two minutes later but Chris Tilbury headed over from close range from a Stuart Wakenshaw cross.

The visitors came out with more conviction at the start of the second half and thought they had equalised on 53 minutes when from a Wakenshaw free kick the ball was headed on and stabbed home but Mat Shorter was adjudged to be offside.

On the hour they got back on level terms with a well worked goal. Gavin West?s clever reverse pass let in Tilbury down the wing and a defensive mistake allowed him to cross low for a Wakenshaw strike that took a deflection off Short to leave Meeds helpless.

Both sides could have won it from then but Callington got caught offside when they threatened. The best chance for the Lambs came in the final minutes for Adcock but his overhead kick cleared both keeper and crossbar.

A more than welcome point for Callington and it leaves the Lambs slightly off the chasing pack but it still leaves them in sixth position.
