Juventus League U16s
Alphington 7
Okehampton Argyle 1
DESPITE the scoreline this was Argyle?s best performance of the season against top-of-the-table Alphington.
A tactical rethink, prompted by the players, made a big difference. The addition of Tom Powell to an already strong defence enabled the back line to send men forward centrally, or on either flank.
The team started to work the wings to great effect. Stepto and Monnox worked hard as wing backs. Morgan used his strength and discipline to hold up play, and supply the speedy Evans, who took the lead for Argyle after ten minutes.
Argyle kept their shape, causing much discontent in the opposition, who only just managed to equalise by half-time. They scored again five minutes into the second half.
Then came the turning point of the game. Morgan burst through the Alphington defence and, one-on-one with the keeper was brought crashing to the ground. A penalty was awarded, but the keeper was allowed to stay on the pitch.
Griffith stepped up to the spot and smashed the ball off the crossbar into the goal. The boys celebrated, but the referee?s whistle was not forthcoming. While they continued to fight, Okehampton conceded a few goals.
A frustrated opposition were forced to scythe a persistent Morgan to the ground, resulting in a booking.
Okehampton received praise for their determination, from the Alphington manager.
Man of the match: Hooper.
