A WEST Devon volunteer who has sacrificed his free time to help police prevent crime and improve safety in Devon and Cornwall is in the running for a prestigious national award. Colin Harris of Lewdown has spent 13 years helping crimefighting agencies work with local communities to make them better places to live. He regularly completes up to 40 hours of voluntary work a week, sometimes starting as early as 6am. That commitment and dedication has seen Mr Harris shortlisted for the Year of the Volunteer Award 2005, championed by Chancellor Gordon Brown. The ceremony will take place on January 26 next year at the Theatre Royal in London. Mr Harris, 61, said: ?At the end of a long day of voluntary work there is nothing more satisfying than realising that you have helped a community feel safer and more secure in their homes. ?As long as I am fit and able, I will carry on my voluntary work, as I firmly believe it does help the community. Most are appreciative of what I have done. ?I enjoy volunteering in the criminal justice system ? we are lucky to live in one of the safest parts of the country.? West Devon crime prevention officer PC Angie Frost, who nominated him for the award, said: ?People like Colin are rare and this recognition is well deserved. ?In the past three years he has helped set up 40 new Neighbourhood Watch schemes in West Devon, with 45% of housing in the area now covered. ?His commitment and selfless work to the cause of crime prevention and reduction has helped make the area one of the safest rural places to live in Devon and Cornwall.? Mr Harris serves on the Crimestoppers Board and the West Devon Community Safety Partnership Committee. He was chairman of the Devon and Cornwall Community Watch Association, and continues to play an active role. As well as being chairman of West Devon Neighbourhood Watch and chairman of Lewdown Countryside Watch, he also has links Horse and Farm Watch, and plays an active role the West Devon Youth Affairs team. He has helped crimefighting agencies and organisations establish closer links with communities and organised many events. Mr Harris will pick up a medal as South West Regional Category Champion for the awards on October 26 at County Hall, Exeter.
