STARDOM is beckoning a talented musician from West Devon, following the completion of his first album. Jonathan Scott, a former Kelly College student who is now a member of Jools Holland?s Rhythm and Blues Band, is causing a stir on the music circuit with his album entitled ?Welcome to Jonnyland?. The finished product is the result of seven years of hard work by Jon, who wrote all the songs, and co-producer Theo Gordon. He was lead vocalist on the album with added vocals from Sarah Westergaard ? his trumpet playing features throughout the album and heavily in song ?Killer Blow?. Jon, 41, said: ?The whole project has been a learning experience for me and I found it fantastic. The official release date is July 9 and will be in most record shops.? Playing music professionally has been something Jon has always wanted to do since a child. At the age of 11 he won a music scholarship to Kelly College which enabled him to study with the Rev Anthony Curry, a world authority on the music of JS Bach. Mr Curry recognised an untapped talent in Jon, whose instruments were trumpet and piano, for singing ? a talent which until now has resisted exploiting. Jon lived in Tavistock with his parents until 1984 when he left to continue his musical education at the School of Music in Birmingham where he spent three years. After graduating he made a move to London to ?make a go? of his music career and was asked to take the position of lead trumpet for The Big Band of The Sporting Club of Monte Carlo, where he stayed for two years. He said: ?I loved it there. It was a surreal time. Weird things used to happen. One night we were backing Sammy Davis Jnr and like a wraith from the side of the stage, Michael Jackson appeared. He came on, sang ?Bad? with Sammy and disappeared again.? Jon has since worked with artists including Donna Summer, Roots Manuva and Sting. He said: ?Sting hired me for an 18-month world tour, but fired me after 18 days. He said my trumpet was stealing his thunder!.? Then 17 years ago Jon was given the ?once in a lifetime? chance to perform with Jools Holland. Jon received a call out of the blue to perform in two gigs with Jools, who wanted to expand his live band for the concerts and was one trumpet player short. After Jon performed at the gigs Jools was so impressed with his playing that he fired the current trumpet player in the band and took Jon on ? 17 years later he is still performing as lead trumpet player with the band. Although Jon?s main talent and profession is the trumpet, he has taken on the previous singing advice from his old teacher Mr Curry. Jon now loves to sing and his debut album features him singing throughout. He said: ?I think old Curry was right. I love singing now. I should have listened to him!? Not only has Jon ?cut? his first CD but he has also composed and performed the original music for the film ?The Gigolos?, which was released six months ago. The film was only released into a few select cinemas, including the Wharf. It is an Arthouse Production and had its premier at Cambridge. The film is about a gigolo, who specialises in older wealthier women, and his valet who search for love and friendship in the world of the London male escort. Jon was approached to compose the music for the film from friend Richard Bracewell, the film?s director. He said: ?It was wonderful. I love film music and it was a huge pleasure for me to do that ? the whole experience was brilliant.? ?The Gigolos? (cert 12A) will be at The Wharf from Sunday, July 1 until Thursday, July 5.
