THE ladies of Yelverton Golf Club on July 17 played their monthly stableford competition, combined with the Cancer Relief spoon competition for the highest individual score.
The silver division was won by Dawn Bolt with 39 points, runner-up was Laura Eastwood with 35 points and third was Barbara Berryman with 34 points.
The bronze division and the Cancer Relief spoon were won by Angie Howard, with 41 points, runner-up was Pat Chambers with 36 points and third was Lilias Strachan with 33 points. Laura Eastwood and Trudi Luke both played one hole in two shots.
On July 24 the ladies each invited a guest to play at the club in a greensome competition. Barbara Perriton and her guest Jan Brown from Staddon Heights Golf Club won with 36 points, runners-up were Sue Pearman with her guest, Jean Pearce from Bude Golf Club, with 35 points and third were Di Reardon with her guest Pam Giles from Stover golf club with 35 points. The prizes all had a purple theme.
On July 31 all the past ladies? captains were invited to play in a 13-hole stableford competition. This was won by Mrs Pat Chambers. Following the competition the past captains all enjoyed an excellent lunch in the clubhouse.
The ladies in the county scratch competition played their last match of the season away against Torquay on July 28. Yelverton lost by four matches to three, but the team has qualified to play in the semi-finals at Tiverton on September 5.
The Devon League team played their final match of the season on July 28 at home against Portmore Golf Club and won ten points to one. The team, captained by Joan Voisin, has had a satisfactory season with good, enjoyable golf, winning seven out of ten matches.
Maggie Flanagan and Dawn Bolt qualified to represent Yelverton Golf Club in the Devon County Ladies? Golf Association?s foursomes competition for the Willes Little trophy. On July 31 they played in the quarter-finals against Sidmouth at Churston Golf Club. Maggie and Dawn won two up and one to play. The semi-finals and finals will be played on August 22 at Bigbury Golf Club.
Laura Eastwood played in the English Ladies? Close Stroke Play competition, which was held at Saunton Golf Club between July 14 and 16. She played some good golf to finish in joint sixth position.
On August 1 Laura played in the Royal Birkdale Ladies? Scratch competition. This was a 36-hole competition played over one day and open to all ladies with a handicap of 8 or lower. Laura played two excellent rounds of 75 and 73, finishing in joint fourth position and winning the first prize for the under 21s.
l The West Devon Scratch League, for the Brian Bounsall trophy, was played at Yelverton Golf Club last weekend.
In searing heat the competition, played in three phases: four-ball better ball, foursomes and singles, saw some spectacular golf.
James Ruth and Damion Gee scored a 63 in the four-ball better ball on the Saturday, then Damion went on to confirm his form by shooting a new amateur course record of 64 in the singles on Sunday.
The home team won with a total points score of 51, beating the holders, Tavistock, who gained 46 points. Staddon Heights were third with 44 points, and Elfordleigh were last with 19 points.
Tournament organiser Stewart Barnes said this was a fine victory for the home side, who played well to beat a side studded with county players.
