Plymouth and district women's hockey league
Okehampton Ladies seconds 2
Mannamead Ladies fourths 1
BEFORE this fixture Okehampton were lying second in the league and Mannamead were in third so the Oke girls knew that this was going to be a closely contested match.
With captain Sarah Jones unable to play due to injury, Amanda Sim played at centre half supporting and distributing the ball throughout the team. Inside forwards Sophie Whiteley and Brieze Reed worked tirelessly preventing Mannamead from finding rhythm and intercepting some crucial balls.
The Mannamead attack looked dangerous with the forwards showing confidence in the Oke circle. Despite solid tackling from Oke's full back Katie Graves and tight marking from half backs Rachel Laidlaw and Nat Dennis, Mannamead were awarded a penalty corner early in the game which they made no mistake in converting into a goal.
Okehampton came straight back into the match with skilful passing between right wing Sophie Cunnington and centre forward Kim Davey. Davey capitalised on this flowing play and slotted the ball past the Mannamead keeper.
Just before half-time Davey added to the score line again giving Oke the lead.
The second half saw the teams evenly matched with both sides having scoring chances but neither being able to increase the score line.
Okehampton's Hannah Whiteley made some penetrating runs but was thwarted by solid tackling from the Mannamead defence.
Oke substitutes Eve Colton and Kate Yells interchanged smoothly into the team bringing fresh enthusiasm and determination but the home side still could not increase their lead.
Player of the match: Amanda Sim.
