A GROUP of walkers have raised more than £4,000 for charity following two 15-mile walks across Dartmoor.

The money was raised by 29 hikers, following a weekend of moor walking in stormy conditions, on September 29-30. This was the Dartmoor Challenge group's tenth anniversary walk, and it was a record success, with the hikers almost doubling the £2,200 sum raised last year, and easily surpassing the £3,000 target set by organisers.

Both the walks saw the hikers set off from Princetown, on the first day the walkers destination was the Warren House Inn, Postbridge. The second day's south moor route was between Princetown and Cornwood.

The Dartmoor Challenge group presented the cheque for £4,000 to CLIC, on Saturday, November 4, at the Prince of Wales pub in Princetown.

The annual Dartmoor Challenge walk had been scheduled for April but was postponed because of the foot and mouth outbreak.

Walkers aged from 16-65 took part, with some coming from as far afield as Scotland, Northampton and London.

Organiser Steve Parker said everyone had just got on with the walk, despite some very arduous conditions and all deserved credit for their achievement.
