SCHOOLCHILDREN from West Devon and East Cornwall will head for Tavistock next month to take part in the annual folk dance festival. Tavistock Lions Club in association with Tavistock Folk Dance Club will play host to the young dancers. It is the fourth year the Lions Club has been involved with the event which for a quarter of a century was organised by the folk dance club. Last year was the first time it had been staged at the college and as it proved to be such a popular venue, it will be used again. Folk dancing by children is traditional at this time of year as it is a celebration of springtime. Around 150 pupils from schools in Delaware, Buckland Monachorum, Mary Tavy and Stonehouse will be participating, as well as Tavistock schools including Mount House, St Peter's, Whitchurch, St Rumon's and Tavistock Community Primary. Each school will be performing a folk dance they have chosen for themselves as well as participating in other dances where everybody can take part. An experienced caller will be on hand all morning so the children and spectators can expect an energetic and enjoyable time. The doors open on Saturday May 12 at 9am with the dancing starting at 9.30am and going on until 1pm. Refreshments will be available and there will be a number of charity stalls. The Lions are pleased that with their assistance the event is continuing into its 28th year and hopes that adults attending will help with the cost of staging it by making a financial donation on entry. Anybody requiring further information can contact Lions Club member Steve Grummitt on 01822 615526.
