A PRIMATE ecologist stands alone on a mountain plateau in Central Africa, his mind wandering back to his home hills of Dartmoor. Suddenly, with the mist descending, he is disturbed by a female visitor who questions the foundations of his attempt to save a population of rare blue monkeys. As day passes to night, the two are lured into a remote ravine clothed in dense montane forest where they enter a world of danger, guilt, pain, addiction and ultimately hope. Linking Dartmoor with Malawi, and dealing with the conflict between conservation and development, High Plateau is a dance and music thriller inspired by the animistic traditions of Central Africa, and based on Mark Beeson's long poem The Blue Monkeys of Zomba originally read on BBC Radio 3. The play features drama, dance and music in equal measure and is performed by a small cast who have been working in depth on the project for over six months. Written by Mark Beeson, with choreography by Dartmoor dance artist Ros Maynard and music by Dartmoor composer Gillian Webster, it is being toured by MED Theatre in November and visits Chagford, Jubilee Hall on November 15. All performances begin at 7.30pm. Tickets £7 adults £5 concessions £3.50 children. Booking 01647 441356, email [email protected]">[email protected]
