Devon & Exeter League Premier Division
Thorverton . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2
Okehampton Argyle . . . . . . . .2
NEWLY promoted Thorverton remain unbeaten after four matches and stay one point ahead of Argyle after this hard fought draw.
Early play was fairly even with a strong wind at their back perhaps giving Thorverton a slight edge.
Mike Vernon continued where he left off last week by playing well at the centre of defence for Argyle.
A free kick from Stuart Cann which went wide and a header put over the bar from Hackett was the closest Argyle got to scoring during the first half hour, but then a jinking run by Mark Williams, which took him into Thorverton?s penalty box, saw him brought down from a late tackle, and Cann converted the resulting penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way.
Thorverton nearly equalised just before half time, when Andrews beat keeper Sandercock to a through ball, only to see his lob roll inches wide of the left upright.
Argyle had a dream start to the second half when from their first attack they were awarded a free kick about 35 yards out. With everyone expecting a lob into the goal area. Stuart Cann fooled defenders and attackers alike by unleashing a powerful daisy cutter, which whistled past the static keeper and into the corner of the net.
Ten minutes into the second half Thorverton pulled a goal back when a disorganised defence allowed a cross from the left to find Adrian Andrews, who had time to pick his spot to score in a virtually unguarded goal.
With time running out Argyle made the mistake of trying to close up shop, bringing on a defender in place of an attacker.
But unfortunately they left a side door open and a further left wing attack from Thorverton saw them score a similar goal to their first and by the same player, Andrews.
Argyle are at home in the first round of the Devon Premier Cup, their opponents are Princess Yachts International, who play in the Plymouth and District Combination Premier Division. Kick-off 2.30pm.
