OKEHAMPTON Cycle Club?s open 10 mile time trial last Wednesday evening drew an entry of 60 riders from all over the South West but in the end turned into a family affair with winner Wendy Houvenaghel taking top spot and husband Ian coming second. In what is still a male dominated sport this may come as a surprise but of course when your wife happens to be a member of the Great Britain cycling team, a World Track Cup Gold medallist winner, former national ladies time trial champion and Commonwealth Games competitor, the male pride can take some comfort in that they were beaten by an elite lady rider. With the recent spate of wet weather it was a relief that conditions remained dry for the competitors. The course started on the A30 dual carriageway 2.4 miles west of Sourton and proceeded towards Launceston before turning at the Stowford Cross slip road, crossing the flyover bridge and returning on the eastbound carriageway to the finish. At the midway time check Wendy was on 11 minutes 29 seconds closely followed by husband Ian on 11.36, Nick Harwood on 11.40 and Okehampton based rider Steve Sage on 11.41. However by the end of the race Wendy had opened up a 21 second lead on the rest of the field clocking a finish time of 21.10. Results: 1, W Houvenaghel (Scienceinsport), 21 mins 10 secs; 2, I Houvenghel (BikeChainRicci), 21.31; 3, S Dodd (TeamTour), 21.32; 4, S Sage (North Devon Wheelers), 21.34; 5, A Fitzgerald (Bikinmotion), 21.50; 6, N Harwood (North Devon Wheelers), 21.51. At the post race prize giving Robert Szembek, the club chairman, thanked everyone for participating with special thanks to the race marshals, timekeepers, ladies providing the refreshments and friends of Okehampton C.C. who helped to make the event a success. l If you are interested in cycling and want further information about the club call in and see Darren at Okehampton Cycles.
