Devon Cup
Torbay 1
Tavistock 3
AN excellent opening to the hockey match on Sunday saw an impressive one-touch move by Tavistock, resulting in a goal by Josh Cowen. This was followed by a period of sustained pressure, leading to a number of shots on goal and short corners, one of which was converted by Paul Marchant. Tavistock continued to create many opportunities, but were unable to extend their lead, going in at 2-0.
The second half proved frustrating for Tavistock, as Torbay came out fighting with strength in numbers through the middle of the park. They placed some pressure upon Tavistock's defence early on, with an inspired performance from Phil Edwards, keeping the opponents at bay.
However, a Torbay short corner ended up with a strong flick into Tavistock's goal.
As the half continued, Tavistock returned to a more controlled and balanced style of play, applying more pressure and developing open play attempts on goal. A switched short corner routine was finished off by Damian Heard, who waited and rose to the challenge, putting the tie out of reach for Torbay. Tavistock will face North or East Devon in the semi-finals, due to be played in March.
