HUNDREDS of people flocked into Tavistock?s Bedford Square last Friday to watch the official switching on of the Christmas lights by the town mayor, Cllr Marjorie Corner.

In addition to the colourful bulbs illuminating the town?s main streets, the Tree of Light, organised by Tavistock Lions Club, also lit up the facade of the town hall.

The switch-on was accompanied by a short service of dedication, led by Prebendary John Rawlings, the vicar of Tavistock, Father Dennis O?Gorman and the Rev Jeff Moles.

Dave McDowall, of Tavistock Chamber of Commerce, who organised the Christmas light operation, was delighted at the crowds who turned up to watch the ceremony.

?It was excellent ? we were very pleased,? he said.

Music during the evening was provided by the Pirate FM radio car, sponsored by Just Electric at West Devon Business Park.

The company generously donated prizes for a special Christmas draw, which was picked live on Pirate FM Radio on Monday.

The winners were: Dimplex oil-filled radiator, Marcia Glanson of Tavistock; Glen fan heater, Kay Cudmore of Whitchurch; Braun food mixer, Mr S Dogherty of Princetown; Daewoo microwave, Mrs S Bond of Bere Alston; shower radio, Daniel Scott of Tavistock.
