A LONG-awaited pedestrian crossing at a major junction in Callington could be on the cards if Tesco wins planning permission for a new store in the town.
The supermarket will be asked to make a community contribution (Section 106 agreement) as part of the application expected to be submitted by the end of the year — top of the town council's list is a crossing across the A388 and A389 near the centre of town.
At a meeting of Callington town council last week, members said it was their priority when it came to 'planning gain', as they felt it was essential to allow safer pedestrian access from the west of the town to the new store in Tavistock Road.
Cllr Jeremy Gist said the town council had been trying for years to get a crossing at that location and had been promised it on several occasions.
'There is every possibility this could happen under the section 106 agreement,' he said. 'The company has looked at it and thinks we are right. Hopefully there will be people walking to the new store from the west side of the town and in order to make it safe for them we need some sort of crossing at that junction.'
The council is urging Tesco to invest in all possible pedestrian routes to the new development from the adjoining areas of the town. A contribution towards play areas has also been asked for.
