WEST Devon Borough Council has been under scrutiny this week, with a visit from the Local Government Improvement Team.

The team has been at the borough?s offices at the invitation of the council and is made up of a local authority chief executive and senior officer, councillors from other councils, a representative from an organisation outside local government and a review manager from the Improvement and Development Agency.

The team will be undertaking a review to help the council in working out how best to respond to the considerable changes to, and growing demand for local services.

The intention of these ?critical friends? is to help councils recognise and celebrate their strengths as much as identifying their weaknesses.

The key purpose of the week-long visit is to stimulate widespread discussion within the local authority and the community about how the borough council can become more effective.
