YOUNG crime fighters from Tavistock were on the receiving end of the strong arm of the law on Monday evening.
Ollie Burrows and Eleanor Whitmore were congratulated by Devon High Sherrif Philip Tuckett after being presented with the McDonald?s Community Safety Award at the Devon Crimebeat 2004 Community Awards evening.
The two youngsters, who are members of the Tavistock and District Youth Council, received the awards in recognition of their work with the Youth Café.
The Youth Café is being set up to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the enjoyment of young people in the area.
Simon Dell, Crimebeat officer for Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, said: ?All the members of the Youth Café steering committee have put a great deal of effort into the project and thoroughly deserve this award. They have been really inspirational in their determination to go ahead with what will eventually be a fantastic resource.?
The award was presented by McDonald?s Head of Security Stuart Green who was so impressed with the youngsters? efforts he travelled from Sutton Coldfield to attend the ceremony.
Other audience members included the Countess of Devon, West Devon Borough Council mayor Peter Hill and his wife Gay and Devon and Cornwall Area Chief Constable Tony Melville.
The National Crimebeat Award 2003 went to a youth group called TREADS from Barnstaple who work to prevent car crime.
Devon Crimebeat was set up with the aid of donations from charitable organisations and local businesses with the aim of funding youth projects promoting community safety and tackling crime.
