WHITCHURCH Cricket Club members will be washing and pressing their whites later this month as they get ready to star in a video — for the West Devon club is one of only three in the whole of the country to have been selected to help promote a cricket training film.
The English Cricket Board, the country's controlling body, decided the West Devon club was a prime example of club cricket at village level and an invitation was issued to the committee asking if it would take part.
Secretary Chris Meadows said the club was extremely pleased and honoured to have been chosen and it was 'quite an accolade'.
'We received a letter from the ECB's club development executive Edward Leverton explaining the board was putting together a package,
primarily for coaching but also looking at the aspect of parents involved with coaching,' he said.
'Edward Leverton has been along on several occasions to watch us. We have a very strong colts set-up and all our colts managers are parents — our success and growth is largely due to parental involvement.'
The club has 180 members and, as well as fielding senior teams, has six colts teams.
'This honour vindicates all the hard work put in by a lot of people,' said Chris. 'We have built ourselves a first-class reputation through parental involvement and support from local schools.'
A production crew will descend on Whitchurch on July 28 and film an evening league match between the under 14s against Werrington.
'The production team also intend to hold interviews with six parents who have been in the colts' development,' said Chris.
'Without parent involvement we would not have been as successful as we are. We are growing in membership and have an increasing healthy number of youngsters joining the club.
'We are lucky as we have support from schools including Whitchurch Primary School which is holding an inter schools tournament this week. Tavistock College, Kelly College and Kelly College Junior School and Mount House all feed youngsters through to us.'
The video will include footage from two other clubs in Lancashire and Staffordshire and will be distributed to clubs throughout the country by the ECB.
'It could even go global,' added Chris.
l Stannary Brass Band will be holding a fundraising concert at the Whitchurch ground next Wednesday at 7.30pm.
