Tavistock RFC 15

TAVISTOCK put their defeat at Crediton last time out behind them with this hard working win against Wellington on Saturday.

Tavistock knew this was going to be a hard game as the visitors had beaten promotion candidates Okehampton and Truro in their last two outings — and so it proved as Tavy laboured to victory.

Throughout the game Tavistock created chances but resolute Wellington defence proved a hard nut to crack and to add insult to injury Wellington played the slope better in the second half and kept the home side pinned in their own territory for long periods.

Tavistock started well and from a well worked line-out the towering Andy Hunt fed prop Matt Kerswill, who raced along the touchline and provided a scoring pass for the supporting Duncan Law.

Tavistock increased their lead with a second try on the half hour when good hand in the backs put centre Matt Witcher over in the corner; James Kaminski added the conversion for a 12-0 lead.

With the half coming to an end Tavistock mounted attack after attack but poor finishing and ball control let opportunities go begging.

Playing against the wind and slope in the second half Tavistock were forced to run the ball on virtually every occasion.

Captain Jake Phillips and Matt Witcher both created openings which should have resulted in more than the solitary second half score, a penalty goal from full back Mark Hennessy.

As the game drew to an end Wellington got a consolation score via the replacement scrum half Tim Jenkinson.
