PERUVIAN craft items will be on sale at Tavistock panner market this Saturday (April 22) in aid of an organisation supporting street children in that country. The stall will be run by Whitchurch resident Becky LeSeelleur, who ran a similar stall before Christmas last year, which was a great success. Becky had a voluntary placement with the organisation ? Colibri ? two years ago. One hundred per cent of the profits from the market stall will be sent to Cusco, Peru, to support the drop-in centre and orphanage run by Colibri for the street children of the city in the Andes. Becky saw first-hand the needs of the children during her five weeks at the orphanage, where young people are housed temporarily with the help of mentors, who are policemen. They are offered food and during the morning they go to secondary school and during the afternoon they have to do different work. At the drop-in centre they are offered psychological help, food, scholastic help, medical care and entertainment. Children as young as three visit the centre. Becky is also sponsoring one young man through university. Items for sale on the stall will include alpaca wool jumpers and scarves, hats and socks; original framed artwork and hand-painted gift cards. All of the goods have been bought at a fair price from Peruvian craftspeople.
