A WHITCHURCH man has successfully completed 24 weeks on the Army's specially designed course to become a combat infantryman. Calvin Griffiths, 21, passed out at the Infantry Training Centre, Catterick, where he has been undertaking the Combat Infantryman's Course. Only 26 passed out from 3 Platoon the Rifles Company, who started on the course in October. Four people received awards, including Calvin, who received recognition for being the recruit who had consistently been the best shot throughout the course. The rifles were formed on February 1 from the Devonshire and Dorset Light Infantry, the Light Infantry, the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry and the Royal Green Jackets. Lt Col Thornton, commanding officer, said: 'The 24-week programme has included a number of significant milestones that those soldiers on parade have had to overcome. They are all leaving the Infantry Training Centre to join their chosen Infantry Battalions. Their future is exciting. Some will be serving in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo and other operational theatres immediately.'
