A DRIVER has been banned from driving for three years after she crashed her car and rolled it into a farmer’s gateway while drunk and high on crack cocaine.

Pharmacy assistant Hayley Sumner lost control of her Volvo on the A386 near Okehampton and had to be cut free from the wreckage by the fire service.

Her front seat passenger got out of the car on her own but suffered a suspected fracture in her back, Exeter Crown Court was told.

Sumner was found semi conscious in the wreckage and told rescuers ‘I’ve been smoking crack and drinking. I should not have been driving’.

Sumner, aged 39, of Camborne, Cornwall, admitted driving while unfit through drink or drugs. She also admitted to making threats to kill, battery, and criminal damage after she threatened to kill her estranged husband with a kitchen knife after going to his house in Bideford to do her washing.

She was banned from driving for three years and ordered to attend 60 days rehabilitation activities as part of a three year community order by Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC.

He also banned her from entering Bideford or contacting her husband under a restraining order.

Miss Felicity Payne, prosecuting, said the accident happened at around 11 am on the A386 at Ball Farm, Sourton on April 27 last year.

She said: ‘The Volvo was found upside down and on its roof in the entrance to a farm. The driver had lost control and collided with a bank and some trees and rolled over several times.

‘It ended in the middle of a private driveway and there were concerns for the driver and her female passenger who already left the car but was lying on a grass verge.

‘The driver was trapped until she was released by the fire service. Witnesses who went to assist saw the female driver was injured and noticed a half empty bottle of wine by her seat.

‘She regained consciousness and stated ‘I’ve been smoking crack and drinking. I should not have been driving’. She was breath tested in hospital and after caution replied ‘I f***ed up.”

The breath test, taken at 3.15pm showed a reading of 53 micrograms of alcohol. The limit is 35. No test for drugs was carried out.
