D-DAY is approaching for Tavistock, as judges in a top regional competition prepare to visit the town to assess its entry. Tavistock has already made it to the finals of the Best Local Food Competition ? but is likely to face stiff competition from the other finalist in its category, which is to be announced shortly. John Taylor, chairman of Tavistock Forward, which has submitted the town?s entry in the competition, said the judging day was ?eagerly awaited?. Mr Taylor said: ?The Eatwise group is working hard on a presentation to blow the opposition in the competition away! ?We think the judges are likely to be coming to Tavistock on March 9 ? and we regard Bridport as our main competitor in the competition.? He said meanwhile the Tavistock Eatwise Campaign was working closely with Tavistock College and Kelly College to get the ?eat local? message across to their students. Colin Eves, principal of Tavistock College, said: ?We are delighted to be involved in this initiative. ?We feed almost 2,000 staff and students each day, so are probably the biggest local caterers. ?We do all we can to source food locally and are pleased this can be done at the right price.? A spokesman for Kelly College said: ?Kelly College is committed to using local suppliers of fresh produce and is proud to play its part in Tavistock?s bid to be the best local food community in the South West. ?We know the farms where our meat comes from and we can adapt our menus to take advantage of expert advice on availability. ? Our food is fresher, more seasonal and much better value.?
