THE result of the referendum on whether West Devon will have a directly elected mayor will be announced tomorrow (Friday).

West Devon's mayoral referendum is on course for a good turnout as the ballot closes today. Around 14,800 ballot papers have been returned as of Wednesday morning, a turnout of 38 per cent. Last week, Plymouth voted against the proposal of an elected mayor by 59 per cent to 41 per cent with a turnout of 39.8 per cent.

The Electoral Reform Society in London will stop counting postal ballot papers received after 9pm, today (Thursday).

Borough chief executive David Incoll and mayor Robin Pike will travel to London to observe the count and attend the declaration.
