I HOPE Mr Kirkpatrick (Letters, April 26) is pleased with the recent recommendations of the town council properties committee concerning banners and the Lions' car show on Bedford Square.

We have a flexible, reversible decision-making process which is responsive to well argued cases presented by our constituents.

I am surprised that Mr Kirkpatrick takes a negative view of our proposal to move the town council offices to Court Gate since it is aimed at saving the taxpayers of Tavistock £250,000 in the short-term, and continuous running costs in the long-term.

The parish council originally had offices in the town hall, built in 1864, but changes in local government in the subsequent years necessitated the construction of additional buildings, the latest of which are the borough offices at Kilworthy Park.

West Devon Borough Council is now the major authority in the area; Tavistock Town Council is essentially a parish council.

How much money does Mr Kirkpatrick feel the ratepayers of Tavistock should have to pay for local government offices and debating chambers?

The town council should be applauded for considering moving to Court Gate, as the debating chamber is much more cramped than our existing one at Drake Road.

However, I hope that if we are able to move to this town centre location, a further, non-financial spin-off will be that the residents of Tavistock, whom we serve, will find the council more accessible and become more involved in our activities.

Professional advice is taken on various aspects of management of the town's properties, though it is not always a panacea.

In the end it is for councillors to make the strategic decisions.
