A NEW mayor of Tavistock was elected at Tuesday?s meeting of the town council, following the resignation of Cllr Ken Sanders through ill health.
Cllr Marjorie Corner, the former deputy mayor, was unanimously voted to serve as leader of the council until the annual meeting in May.
Cllr Judith Williams, who proposed Cllr Corner, said she was sorry Cllr Sanders was unable to continue as mayor but pleased members had nominated Cllr Corner, who had been carrying on his duties during the last few months.
?I hope she has a very good six months,? she said.
Cllr Ted Sherrell said Cllr Corner was ?a lady of great integrity and courage? and wished her ?a splendid mayoral year?.
Cllr Corner, whose daughter, Debbie Vidak, will act as her consort, said she was ?extremely sad? at Cllr Sander?s ill health and hoped a step back from the council would aid his recovery.
Two councillors were nominated as deputy mayor ? Cllr Jenny Metcalf and Cllr Norma Woodcock, last year?s mayor.
Cllr Woodcock was voted to serve as deputy.
