SHOPPERS in Callington who park in the pannier market are being warned that enforcement of the parking orders will come into force next month.
Parking in the pannier market is limited to 30 minutes and that has not changed, however lack of enforcement in recent years has seen people taking advantage and leaving cars parked for several hours or even all day.
Callington Town Council clerk Helen Dowdall said: ‘People were abusing the system and parking there all day.
‘Unless you have a permit, which is given to tenants in the market, you are allowed to stay for 30 minutes — enough to pop to the chemist, get a haircut or pop to the shops.
‘Having worked with Cornwall Council, we are now paying for an enforcement officer to undertake regular patrols of the pannier market so we can legally enforce the parking orders. The enforcement officer will do regular patrols during the days and evenings.
‘Hopefully, this will help to improve the free flow of the traffic and allow people to freely visit the pannier market and other shops in the town.’
The town council has said it will not tolerate people who are caught abusing the parking orders.
The enforcement officer will begin regular patrols on April 1.
