I HAVE noted with concern the prevarication regarding repairs to the ceiling at Tavistock Town Hall and the potential for increasing costs likely to be underwritten by increases in council tax for residents and businesses alike. While holidaying in France recently I was keen to note that a number of infrastructure and refurbishment programmes, including the mairie (town hall) refurbishment in Chatelaillon Plage just south of La Rochelle, were being funded for 22.8% of the cost by the European Union. This struck me as an equivalent project to our own listed building requirements. Whatever the personal and political views of individuals concerning the ?European project?, while we are paying into its coffers we should make every effort to gain economic benefit at least on a par with fellow member states. I would be interested to find out the result of any investigation by Tavistock Town Council and West Devon Borough Council into the funding assistance availability for our listed building from the European Union (and also English Heritage, the Regional Development Agency et al).
