Duchy Premier Cup St Mawgan 1 Gunnislake 3 WITH the slope and a strong wind in their favour Saints made a good start. Pressure resulted in a number of corners and free kicks around the box. But defensively Gunnislake remained firm for the opening 20 minutes, aided by some excellent claims from Andy Brenton in goal. On 20 minutes Saints were awarded a free kick just 12 yards from goal. The initial effort was well blocked by Ian Gray but the ball fell to a Saints forward who scored from close range. The half continued in similar fashion although the visitors did become more of an attacking force and equalised minutes before the turn around. Dave Yorath was fouled wide on the right. Gray centred and after a strong challenge by Matt Avery the ball fell kindly to Jarryd Kelly who scored. With the elements in their favour Gunnislake got on top in the second period but had to wait until the 70th minute to take the lead. The goal was some what fortuitous as central defender Mark Warwick?s clearance from some 20 yards inside his own half bounced over the embarrassed Saints keeper and into the net. Two minutes later Lee Douglas was fouled in the area and Steff Kelly coolly slotted home from the spot to secure his side?s place in the semi-finals. Gunnislake return to league action this Saturday when they host St Stephen with a 2.30pm kick-off.
