LIBERAL Democrats in West Devon were celebrating last week when they took a seat from the Conservatives in a borough by-election. Their candidate, Adam Bridgewater, enjoyed a convincing win in the Tavistock North ward, taking almost 60% of the vote. The seat was previously held by Tory Shaun Watchorn, who resigned late last year, to take up a job opportunity abroad. Mr Bridgewater defeated Local Conservative candidate and town councillor David Whitcomb and the Green Party's Vanni Cook. Mr Bridgewater said he was 'thrilled and honoured' to have been elected. He said: 'Even before the election was called, we were working hard with people on the ground to solve their problems and resolve their issues. We have just continued this good work, and the people of Tavistock have recognised it. 'I'd like to thank the voters who have put their faith in me, a young man, a newcomer to the borough council. 'My promise is to be there for them – and for the whole community – for the next three years and beyond and show myself worthy of their support.' Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate Adam Symons said Mr Bridgewater would bring 'a fresh perspective' to the borough council. 'I hope that this will encourage more young people to represent their communities. We need a more diverse set of local representatives at all levels of government if we are to reclaim faith in democracy,' he said. Cllr James McInnes, leader of the Conservative group on the council, said: 'Conservatives reman the largest group on West Devon Borough Council, and will continued to fight for the people of Tavistock against policies that hit small rural councils like ours hard. We hope we can count on Liberal Democrat support in doing so.' The council now has 13 Conservatives, nine Independents, eight Liberal Democrats and one ungrouped member. Tavistock North result: Adam Bridgewater, Lib Dem, 812; David Whitcomb, Local Conservative, 425, Vanni Cook, Green Party, 133. Turnout: 33.85%.
