STUDENTS from Tavistock College are celebrating after reaching the finals of the Japanese Speech Contest for Secondary Schools, held at the Embassy of Japan on last weekend. Holly Harrison and Jenny Eden, both Year 8 students, were entered in the Key Stage 3 category. Teacher Crispin Chambers said: ?Despite all the nerves of appearing on a stage in front of so many people Holly and Jenny delivered wonderful speeches and Holly was awarded second place. ?She received a digital camera donated by Ricoh UK and the silver medal from Mr. Fumio Matsunaga, the Director General of the Japan Foundation in London, which co-organises this annual event with the Embassy and the Japanese Language Committee.? This year the Nihongo Cup, as this event is popularly known, received 182 entries from 29 schools throughout the UK. Mr Chambers said: ?The judges commented on the excellent Japanese pronunciation and intonation of Holly and Jenny, who showed what fantastic linguistic talent we have in the college.?
