HUNDREDS of people have made their views clear about the future of Tavistock's Guildhall public toilets, following a series of consultation days held last month. More than 200 residents and visitors, among them the Tavistock Access Group, viewed suggested plans for the toilets at the exhibition staged at Tavistock Pannier Market. West Devon Borough Council is working closely with Tavistock Town Council to provide improved public toilet facilities at the town centre site. Both authorities have committed a total of £150,000 to upgrade the facilities which temporarily closed in the Autumn. Councillors say the views and comments of those who attended the consultation have been fundamental in making a decision on the future of the toilets. Where particular groups can assist in making sure the toilets are user friendly, say for the disabled, officers can now have further meetings to ensure all issues are considered. Cllr Jayne Hill, chairman of West Devon's environment committee, said: 'We are so pleased the consultation brought in so many comments which will all be taken into account when final decisions are made. Partnership working between both councils has been very positive.' Deputy mayor of Tavistock Cllr Anne Johnson said: ' The consultation process was a very positive experience and generated lots of really good ideas, many of which have been taken on board in moving the project forward.' The majority of those who commented on the plans opted for the upgraded toilets to have a pitched roof. Of the two plans on display, the direct access toilets were favoured over the toilet block with a lobby area. The new toilets will include baby changing facilities, will be fully compliant with disabled access legislation and, as far as is possible, will use the existing façade of the building. Sustainable energy features are incorporated in the plans and the suggested features won widespread support at the exhibition. The next step will be to appoint an architect to let and oversee the works which are aimed to be completed later this year. In the meantime temporary toilets are in place next to the Guildhall.
