SIXTEEN people enjoyed 'constructive destruction' at the weekend at Bellever Forest and Tor and went home with a free Christmas tree.

The volunteers helped to clear areas around Bronze Age archaeology, as part of work to preserve the moorland environment for generations to come, led by Paul Rendell from the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust.

Members of SkillForce Devon, a charity that partners with schools to help young people reach their potential, regularly takes its students to work on volunteering activities with the DPHT.

They made the most of the additional benefits by volunteering with their own families, on the understanding that anyone who wanted a Christmas tree could take one home from the land they cleared on the day.

Esther Kelly, who went along with her family and is also an instructor for SkillForce, said: 'Around Christmas, we all need a bit of fresh air and time away from the confines of house and loads of food and family. We had a fantastic time as always, enjoying outdoor exercise but also doing something useful to help with the preservation of the moor — and its inhabitants.

'We came home glowing and happy — with two perfect Christmas trees!'
