A BRIEF postscript to your congratulations to Pen Hadow on his fantastic walk to the North Pole.

So often so called celebrities seem to owe more to media hype than to their own actual achievements, and they often do not live up to expectations when you meet them in the flesh.

Not so with Pen.

On the eve of his departure I was carrying our a community opinion survey as a basis for WDBC policy planning, and I arrived at his gate just as the Landrover was being loaded and equipment was being piled on the drive. Feeling that this might not be an opportune moment to impose my questionnaire, I apologised and sought to withdraw.

Pen wouldn?t think of it, and we sat down to a 20 minute discussion on such issues as community services, housing, tourism, council tax and employment. Pen had intelligent views on all these, more important, a great love for our part of the world and a very real concern for the wellbeing of our residents.

So here?s to you Pen. Congratulations and may there by many other record breaking feats in future.
