TORQUAY visited Rew Meadow on Sunday for a South Devon league match with Belstone emerging victorious by 6 wickets. Put in to bat the away team made a bad start losing 4 wickets in the first 7 overs with both Aidan Easterbrook (7-1-27-3) and Harry Bushin (8-1-22-1) bowling accurately and aggressively. They were helped by good catching behind the wicket by keeper Richard Drake and skipper Wayne Pearce at 2nd slip. Torquay?s captain Dave Lear (57) played a fine innings in the middle order until he was clean bowled by ?Brucie? Walsh (5-1-12-4) in the 29th over. Terry Jeal (1.3-1-0-2) and Walsh made short work of the lower middle order and tailenders to leave the visitors all out for 119. In reply the Belstone players got off to a solid start against some accurate bowling by Mike Hunt (9-1-24-2). Pete Gross (29) and Drake (62) continued their fine form from midweek by compiling an opening partnership of 66 to put the home team firmly on top. The dismissal of Gross in the 14th over led to a mini collapse with both Dennis Edwards and Andrew Paterson falling for ducks. Drake, however, held firm and guided his team to victory with more than 15 overs remaining. In all, Drake hit 8 fours and a six in compiling his second half-century of the season. The win broke a run of 5 consecutive defeats for Belstone in 40-over cricket and provides a confidence boost ahead of Saturday?s annual President?s day match. Belstone man-of-the-match: Richard Drake.
