HAVING returned from holiday and only just having  had an opportunity to read the last two weeks of the Times, I totally agree with the comments written by Sue Hammond (Letters, October 22), in respect of the traffic congestion in the Down Road area.

I was in a similar situation several months ago and reported it to the police, as I was concerned if an emergency vehicle wanted to get through, they would experience difficulties in doing so. Cars were double parked for several hundred metres.

The police informed me they would get someone from traffic to have a look at it, but told me problems such as this did not come under their jurisdiction any longer, and advised me to make contact with the local highways, which I did, to no avail. They gave me a reference number, but to-date nothing else has materialised.

This problem does not only occur on Tuesdays, but most days during the week. I fully understand there are people who work in Tavistock who may not be able to afford car parking fees on a daily basis and are looking to park in areas where  they do not have to pay and there are no time limits throughout the day, but surely sense must prevail — double parking isn't the answer.

I, like Sue, would like to see cones, or better still, double yellow lines on one side of the road to avoid such congestion, and the likelihood of a fatality if the emergency services are unable to get through, to someone dying or in an accident.
