THANK you for the report in the Times (December 24) re the Lottery Grant for the Heroes Return Programme.
The photo of me aged 20 was taken in a transit camp at Ismailia, Egypt, while on our way to Mersa Matruk to rejoin our squadron, having been in a former Italian Hospital at Asmara, recovering from wounds.
An incident occurred in Germany for eight of us, just a few weeks before the end of the war, which could have ruined all that we had been through, but thanks to our leader and comrades all was successfully resolved, but not until we had been released from the RAF in 1949. It was another case of the comradeship and close-knit ties we all shared during our service life.
On leaving the RAF, I became a building contractor and funeral director, which all tied together in those days. I was also one of a small number of people to form the Okehampton and District Lions Club.
Every August, the George Cross Island Association meet for a long weekend to remember our fallen comrades during the well known Pedestal convoy that battled its way to Malta against tremendous odds, which saved the islanders and us from surrender. By doing so, became the first turning point of the war.
It was at this gathering that the 'Heroes Return' came to the fore. Phone calls were made on 0845 102030 or 0845 0000121 for an application form. All they needed was your service number, the Navy, Regiment or RAF.
They check your details through service records, and complete all other details. Also contact the local press where you live with the necessary details. All very simple.
