WARD and Chowen, auctioneers at Tavistock Livestock Centre, report an entry of 219 cattle and a 100% clearance at their recent suckled calf sale.

Prices topped at £615 for a pair of seven mo Charolais x steers from I G Mortimore and Son, Chagford, who won the Cornwall Farmers' Cup for top price steers born on or after March 1, 2010 and the Bridgemans prize for highest price pen of two or more x bred steers.

Top price heifer born on or after March 1, 2010 was £450 for a pair of seven mo Charolais x from J Cole and Son, who won the Sully and Co Cup and the Bridgemans prizes for the highest price pen of two or more x-bred heifers.

Top price pure-bred suckled calf was won by R H Murrin, Bere Alston, with a six mo South Devon steer which realised £555. The Bridgeman's prize for the highest price pen of two or more pure bred steers went to D Bowhay, Mary Tavy for two 6 mo South Devons, realising £535. D Pitt won the Bridgeman's Prize for a pen of two or more pure-bred heifers for a group of four six mo South Devons, which realised £400.

Older cattle topped at £450 for a 15 mo South Devon steer from E J Friend and Son, Lydford.

Other notable prices included £605 for an 11 mo South Devon steer from E J Friend and Son, Lydford; £598 for a pair of 13 mo Charolais and Hereford x steers from J Crouch, Lifton; £550 for a 12 mo Charolais x heifer from J Cole and Son, Ivybridge; £545 for a 11 mo South Devon x steer from Mrs R Fell, Goodameavy, and £490 for a nine mo Charolais x heifer from S I and A M Barkwill, Milton Abbot.

On Monday, November 22 there is the third season's sale of suckled calves, and on Tuesday, December 7 the cattle/sheep fair.
