TRADING Standards has received a number of complaints about unsolicited visits from doorstep traders in the area, offering gardening, building and driveway works.
Complaints received mention poor quality work, excessive costs and even sometimes elderly people being driven to the bank to withdraw cash.
By law, doorstep traders have to give you written information before you agree to a contract, including their name and address, how much the work will cost and how long it will take to complete.
Sgt Dave Anning of Tavistock Police said officers had been in contact with Trading Standards over the 'devious' practises of some companies coming to the area.
He said: 'Make sure they have a mainline number. If they only have a mobile number on their documents don't touch them with a barge pole. But if in doubt refer to Trading Standards with the name of the company.'
Police say traders must also give a written notice explaining your right to a 14 day cooling off period.
Trading Standards advises people not to enter into contracts with unsolicited visitors, to take time, always get three quotes for any work wanted and to always get a second opinion if an unsolicited visitor says you need work doing to your home.
