WHAT is it that drives people to draw similarities with 'The Battle of the Somme' whenever very minor incidents (by comparison) affect their lives.
A few years ago an article (in this newspaper), regarding damage to the Meadows, which was as I remember a few broken trees and a fire in a waste-paper basket, was described as like a scene from 'The Battle of the Somme'. Now Mr Deards (Letters October 19) paints a more graphic picture to illustrate his point on a road-calming project.
Thousands of the country's youth were slaughtered in this and many other battles. The horror of the carnage on these battlefields cannot possibly come close to any similarity with the loutish behaviour of young people or the whys and wherefores of a traffic calming problem.
To me, and I am sure thousands of others, these comparisons are in bad taste.
