THE spotlight will fall on Hatherleigh tomorrow evening (Friday) when the town hosts a live BBC broadcast from the Market Square.

Market Street will be closed from 5.30pm to 7pm for the BBC Spotlight broadcast which will feature the band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines from Dartmouth plus lots of Christmas cheer from the Hatherleigh community.

Editor of Spotlight Roger Clark said: 'Every year on the last Spotlight before Christmas we do a live broadcast from a community and Hatherleigh is a very interesting one to feature.

'It has had its share of problems this year with foot and mouth and this will be reflected in the programme,' he said.

'But we will also be looking at what makes Hatherleigh tick and meeting local characters.'

Mr Clark said Christmas was a time for reflection and drawing a line under things and this was what the people of Hatherleigh would be doing.

Town Mayor Dennis Bater, South West NFU director Anthony Gibson and TV celebrity Noel Edmonds, who lives at Jacobstowe, will be interviewed during the broadcast.

Geoffrey Cleverdon will be giving presenter Teresa Driscoll a guided tour of the town and Justin Leigh and Craig Rich will also be presenting.

PC Mark Hoar said it was a exciting opportunity for Hatherleigh and the good publicity would help to get the town back on its feet.

'We hope people can put up with minor inconvenience of the road closure and understand the benefits to the community,' added PC Hoar.

The whole community is invited to join in tomorrow's broadcast.
