PETER Tavy resident Commander Vaughan Nail has captained the navy?s new survey ship HMS Enterprise home to Plymouth after eight eventful months at sea. SInce leaving the naval base last August, Enterprise has travelled 32,000 nautical miles to conduct oceanographic and hydrographic surveying in a variety of environments and sea conditions throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Among the ship?s deployment roles were a joint survey of the Albanian coast with the Greek and Italian governments and her participation in a major NATO amphibious exercise off the Sardinian coast. The ship also supported the UK?s Hydrographic Office at the International Hydrographic Conference in Monaco. Commander Nail said he was ?particularly pleased with the manner in which younger members of the ship?s company, many of whom are in their first sea draft, have contributed to our mission?. During the trip, the ship?s company were able to unwind from their duties with port visits in Italy and Eygpt where they were treated to a tour of Alexandria, Cairo and the Pyramids.
