THERE are just two weeks to go for fun runners to dig out their running shoes for the Okehampton Sport Relief Mile.

Hundreds of people have already signed up to run, jog or walk one, three or six miles, but there is still plenty of time to sign up, don a Sport Relief headband or t-shirt and take part in the fun.

The Okehampton Mile is the main Sport Relief event for West Devon. This year's run starts at the OCRA Pavilion in the Park, and is mainly on the flat through Simmons Park.

Since its inception, the Okehampton event has raised around £30,000, and this year's event should prove to be a great success.

As well as the mile there are lots of activities going on before and after the run, including free arts workshops in sculpting and willow with Arts Wave Devon, a wide range of sports with OCRA and local clubs, drama activities, music, stalls and food.

This year's event has been organised by OCRA, Okehampton Hockey Club, Okehampton Running Club and Okehampton Round Table, and is looking to build on the success of previous Sports Relief events run by Dave Hocking.

Stuart Lord from OCRA said: 'It's a great chance to set yourself a challenge, raise money for good causes, have fun and be part of a fantastic community event.

'We are delighted that so many people have already signed up but we want even more people in Okehampton to take part and make it the best Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile yet. You can add to the carnival atmosphere and come in fancy dress – and there will be prizes for the best dressed.

'In the past we have had people participating with their dogs, on stilts, even with birds of prey. How are you going to do your Okehampton Sport Relief Mile 2014?

'Let's show the rest of the country what we can do and raise as much money as we possibly can for this incredible cause.'

Entry costs £6 for adults, £3 for under 16s and £15 for families of two adults and two children.

Parklands Leisure Centre is hosting a Sport Relief Swimathon from March 21 to 23, encouraging swimmers to paddle 1.5 kilometres, 2.5 kilometres or five kilometres. Call the centre on 01837 659154 for more information.

Moretonhampstead is also holding a big event for Sport Relief. The Moretonhampstead Mile starts at the Moretonhampstead Sports and Community Centre, with a route around the sports field of one, three or six miles.

Registration starts at 10am, and the event finishes at 2pm. Last year's event had more than 150 participants.
