IF you like music and enjoy playing then Tavistock Town Band could be the place for you.

The band, which was severely reduced in numbers more than a year ago, is aiming to rebuild its strength from the current six members to a full size outfit of about 24 players.

Spokesman Chris Northey says the band has a number of forthcoming engagements that include such diverse venues as Ilfracombe, Kingsbridge, the Wharf and Tavistock band stand.

'We have everything — the instruments, the music, the rehearsal premises and we are financially stable. We just need some more players,' said Chris.

'At the moment there are half a dozen in the band. But if we can get more people coming along then we can expand the band up to its old size again. That would be our aim, but we are happy to be going along as we are.'

He said they were not running a training band. People interested would have to be already able to play.

'We hope there are some competent musicians that are keen to have fun and enjoy playing a nice light summer project.'

Tavistock Town Band has its own musical director Mark North and its next major project is their Proms Concert on Friday, September 28 in the Tavistock Town Hall. This will take the form of a programme featuring the band joined by various guest artists.

If anyone is interested in joining the band they should call secretary Jane Copley on (01822) 615253.
