A CHANCE to get on your walking boots, get out among the stars and raise money for charity is on offer to the people of Okehampton next month.

Okehampton's first Starlight Sponsored Moor Walk will take participants on a walk under the stars to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The event is being organised by Starlight Ladies of Okehampton and the team is encouraging everyone to come in fancy dress or bright colours.

The walk is a six-mile route starting at Okehampton Rugby Club to Klondyke and onto Rough Tor and return. Everyone who completes the walk will be presented with a medal.

As well as enjoying a starlit walk, the rugby club will be hosting multi-sports activities for children from 6.30pm onwards and there will be live music, refreshments and the bar will be open for the evening.

A special element to the night will be the lighting of Candles of Hope to remember or celebrate the life of a loved one touched by cancer.

The candles will be displayed around the rugby club field and will welcome back all walkers.

The Candles of Hope are available for collection at Gillian's Hairdressers, Quinns Hairdressers, Slimming World, Bob Gee and Co and Farmer Luxton's for a donation of £2. Bring them to the rugby club by 6pm for display.

Lisa Blowey, one of the Starlight Ladies, is encouraging everyone to take part. She said: 'At the age of 37 I was diagnosed with breast cancer but thanks to the treatment and care I received, I have now been clear for four years.

'Some are not so lucky, that's why I believe the ongoing work Cancer Research does into new drugs and treatments is vital. It is an unfortunate fact that most people will be touched by cancer some time through their lives and that's why fundraising events like the Starlight Moor Walk are vital to raise funds.'

The Starlight Moor Walk will take place on October 8. Registration is £10 per adult and children under 12 can accompany their parents free of charge.
