AN ORGANISATION in Okehampton which helps and provides opportunities for people with mental health difficulties is holding an open day today (Thursday) to tell people about its work and get them involved.

The Old Theatre Project is part of 'Rethink severe mental illness', the new name for the National Schizophrenic Fellowship, which has been in existence for the last 30 years.

In Okehampton, Rethink offers drop-in sessions and group activities such as art and creative writing.

As part of its outreach programme, it also provides support to individuals in the community, in order that they may achieve personal goals without necessarily attending a day centre.

A link with the Adult Education Department at Okehampton College has allowed service users to take advantage of educational opportunities, which is an important step in building up confidence and self esteem. This inclusion in the wider community can result in the possibility of returning to work, in a paid or voluntary capacity.

To this end, Rethink at the Old Theatre Project is also forming links with local businesses and other organisations in order to promote volunteer and work placements.

Staff are also seeking volunteers to work as befrienders on the outreach programme and other projects, Training and support is offered in return.

Anyone interested in becoming involved in Rethink or who would like to learn more is welcome to attend the open day at its base in St James Street between 10am and 3pm, when they can meet the manager and other staff.
